What is a cooking torch?
A butane cooking torch is a portable device used to cook food with a direct flame. There are different sizes with different uses and can also be referred to as a “culinary torch” or “kitchen blowtorch”.
Is it safe to use a butane torch indoors?
Butane is a safe, non-toxic, clean-burning fuel. It is safe to use indoors. As it is an open flame, please use the usual precautions like keeping away from children, turning it off when not in use and storing it away from heat.

Which kitchen torch to buy?
We like the butane cooking torch (like this one) because we already buy the butane canisters for our home Korean BBQ dinners. The attachment is compact, and is easy to store separately in a drawer. We don’t use it frequently, but when we do, it’s got the firepower to char meats quickly and is easy to handle.
Where can I buy butane for a kitchen torch?
When you’re at the Korean supermarket, take a look around the housewares section. It should be where all the Korean BBQ gear is, like the grill plates and gas stoves are located. It’s also available online on Amazon:

You can use the torch directly on the Korean BBQ grill pan to add some smoky char. How about adding some BUL-MAT (aka flavour of fire! aka smoky flavour) to grilled seafood? We tried melting some cheese on TTEOKBOKKI, but didn’t find it too good. It burned more than it melted.
The best use of this torch is for dried fish snacks. Dried squid? Give it a torch all over so it’s roasted and smoky and a bit charred. Dried fish? Did you get some JWIPO? The most delicious fish jerky in the universe? Yes, give that a nice char. I know, it makes it half the size, but it caramelizes that sugar (yes, it’s got sugar) and it makes it the ultimate midnight snack. You’re welcome.
